Questions over potential conflicts of interest have surfaced after an investigation by The Indian Express found that relatives of Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav and family-run real estate firms acquired at least 137 plots, spread across nearly 168 acres, for around Rs 45 crore since he assumed office on December 13, 2023.

Many of the purchases are located in and around Ujjain, in areas that have witnessed rapid infrastructure expansion and are expected to benefit from changes proposed under the Ujjain Master Plan 2035.

According to The Indian Express investigation, several of the properties are situated close to newly announced road projects or in zones earmarked for conversion from agricultural use to residential or commercial purposes.

Yadav has had a longstanding association with the city’s development, having served as chairman of the Ujjain Development Authority between 2004 and 2010, headed the MP Tourism Development Corporation from 2011 to 2013, and represented Ujjain South in the Assembly since 2013.

Ownership records cited in the report indicate that the acquisitions were made by Yadav’s wife Seema, son Vaibhav’s wife Shalini Yadav, brothers Nandlal and Narayan Yadav, Narayan’s wife Rekha, their son Abhay Yadav, and cousins Govind and Nilesh Yadav, either individually or through four real estate companies linked to the family.

CM Yadav did not respond to multiple requests for comment by the newspaper. A senior state government official said it was not appropriate to link the business or land dealings of his family with the Yadav and his office.

“The CM’s extended family has been in the real estate business for a while. To link their businesses with the CM’s rise in politics will not be proper. When you talk about his family, it should include only his wife, son and daughter-in-law… and there you may not find anything major,” The Indian Express quoted a senior government official as saying on condition of anonymity.

Responding on behalf of Mohan Yadav’s cousins Govind and Nilesh, Govind Yadav’s son Anant Yadav told the newspaper: “Our family is in realty business since 2010 when my father developed a 100-bigha property. My uncle has many housing projects. As private individuals, we have every right to buy, develop or sell any private land. Should we shut down just because the CM is from our family?”

The report noted that nearly 111 acres out of the total land acquired are located along highway and road projects announced under the Yadav government, with major holdings concentrated in villages such as Gangedi, Unhel, Jaiwantpur and Chandesara, adding to scrutiny over the timing and location of the purchases.
