The former chief minister of Jharkhand and a veteran leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Champai Soren, is poised to join the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Friday (August 30), Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced in a late-night post on X.

On August 26, Champai Soren met with BJP leader and Union home minister Amit Shah, as well as Sarma.

Jharkhand is expected to hold elections in November or December this year, with Sarma serving as the party’s election in-charge for the state.

Sarma announced on X that Champai Soren will officially join the BJP on August 30 in Ranchi. Sarma also praised Soren as a "distinguished adivasi leader of the country.”

Soren has yet to resign from his positions in the Jharkhand cabinet and the JMM party. He served as Jharkhand's Chief Minister from February 2 to July 3, succeeding Hemant Soren, who was imprisoned by the Enforcement Directorate on allegations of money laundering. Champai Soren played a significant role in leading the JMM, a key player in the opposition INDIA alliance, through the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

Last week, the 67-year-old leader, who had to step down as Chief Minister to pave the way for Hemant Soren’s return from jail, criticized the party leadership for what he perceived as an insult and revealed that he would soon determine his next political move.

In a statement posted on  X, he voiced his dissatisfaction with his current party, the JMM and provided a detailed account of his grievances.

He also posted videos on social media showcasing his visits to various assembly constituencies, including Kharsawan and Seraikela, where he holds considerable influence.
