A nationwide Bharat Bandh has been called by the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti on Wednesday (August 21) is in response to the Supreme Court's recent decision on the sub-classification of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs).
Political parties such as the Congress, Left parties, Samajwadi Party (SP), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and the Rashtriya Janata Dal have extended their support for it.
The Supreme Court's ruling, which involves excluding the "creamy layer" from SC/ST quotas, has ignited significant controversy and dissent, leading to widespread calls for protests throughout the country.
Dalit and Adivasi organizations, along with SC and ST groups, have voiced their strong support for the nationwide shutdown and planned demonstrations.
These groups are calling for broader representation of marginalized communities in employment and education, as well as the safeguarding of their constitutional rights. The National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR) has outlined their demands, which include a reversal of the Supreme Court's verdict.
On August 1, the Supreme Court authorized states to establish sub-categories within SCs and STs, stating, “Those who truly need it should receive priority in the reservation.” The apex court ruled that sub-classification within SCs and STs is permissible, granting states the power to implement this classification for job quotas and admissions. A seven judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, delivered the verdict with a 6:1 majority.
However, the court decision faced opposition, with some critics arguing that it undermines the fundamental principle of reservation.
