The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has announced its decision to field candidates in all 70 seats for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, scheduled for February, The Indian Express reported.

Lakshman Singh, the president of the BSP’s Delhi unit, told the newspaper, “Our goal is to ensure good participation and representation from all sections of society, and we are focusing on every single seat in the capital.”

While the final list of candidates has yet to be released, Singh revealed that the selection process is underway.

“It is too early to announce our first list of candidates, but interviews are currently taking place, including with some fresh faces. The BSP can be expected to give a tough fight to the AAP, BJP and the Congress,” he added.

Under the leadership of Mayawati, the BSP has contested Delhi Assembly elections since 1993. In 2008, the party achieved its best performance, winning two seats—Badarpur and Gokalpur—with a 14% vote share, ranking third overall.

However, the party’s influence has significantly waned in recent years.

In the 2013 elections, the BSP’s vote share dropped to 5.4%, followed by 1.3% in 2015 and a mere 0.7% in 2020. In the last election, the BSP ranked fifth, trailing behind the Aam Aadmi Party, BJP, Congress, and Janata Dal (United).

Despite its declining vote share, the BSP saw relatively better results in constituencies like Delhi Cantonment, where it garnered 3.1% of the vote, and Badarpur, with a 5.5% vote share.
