The Bharatiya Janata Party’s election expenditure in West Bengal alone exceeded the combined spending declared by the Congress across the five Assembly polls held earlier this year, according to expenditure statements submitted to the Election Commission of India.
The BJP reported spending Rs 286.99 crore in West Bengal, accounting for more than half of its total expenditure of Rs 529.38 crore across the elections in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Of the Bengal expenditure, Rs 217.16 crore was spent on general campaigning, while Rs 69.83 crore went towards candidates and related expenses, The Indian Express reported.
The BJP came to power in West Bengal for the first time, winning 207 of the 293 seats for which results were declared. The Election Commission ordered a repoll in Falta following allegations of electoral offences.
The Congress, meanwhile, reported a total expenditure of Rs 248.55 crore across all five elections. In West Bengal, its central headquarters and State unit together spent Rs 42.08 crore, including Rs 12.96 crore on general campaigning and Rs 29.12 crore on candidates and related expenses.
The Trinamool Congress, which was the BJP’s principal rival in Bengal, has not yet made its expenditure statement public.
The CPI(M), which governed West Bengal for decades before losing power in 2011, reported expenditure of Rs 8.23 crore through its State unit. The party contested 197 seats and won one.
The expenditure figures also show significant variations among the major parties in Kerala. The Congress reported spending Rs 105.34 crore, including Rs 71.30 crore on general campaigning and Rs 34.05 crore on candidates and related expenses. The BJP declared an expenditure of Rs 82.67 crore, comprising Rs 54.93 crore on general campaigning and Rs 27.74 crore on candidates.
The CPI(M), whose Left Democratic Front lost power in Kerala, reported spending Rs 28.60 crore through its State unit. Of this, Rs 26.30 crore was spent on general campaigning and Rs 2.31 crore on candidates.
The Congress-led alliance won 102 seats in the 140-member Kerala Assembly, with the Congress securing 63. The CPI(M) won 26 seats, while the BJP won three.
The BJP also reported expenditures of Rs 96.27 crore in Assam, Rs 51.56 crore in Tamil Nadu and Rs 11.90 crore in Puducherry. Across the five elections, its declared expenditure stood at Rs 529.38 crore, compared with Rs 248.55 crore reported by the Congress.
