Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and four-time MLA Mohan Charan Majhi was declared as the new chief minister of Odisha, after a legislature meeting was held in Bhubaneshwar on Tuesday (June 11), in the presence of the party’s central observers Rajnath Singh and Bhupendra Yadav.

Manjhi’s name was announced by Rajnath Singh. In the process, the state is set to get a new CM after twenty-four long years, which was governed by Naveen Patnaik.

Earlier several names were doing rounds, amid intense speculations where Sambalpur MP Dharmendra Pradhan’s name was tipped among the probable for the coveted post.

However, speculations were put rest after Pradhan was named a Union minister in the Narendra Modi cabinet at the centre.

Mohan Charan Majhi clinched victory in the Keonjhar Assembly constituency in Odisha, triumphing over Biju Janata Dal's (BJD) Mina Majhi by a margin of 11,577 votes.

A prominent member of the indigenous community, Majhi was first elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly from the Keonjhar constituency in 2000.

Thereafter, Majhi won in 2004, 2019 and 2024 Assembly elections from Keonjhar. He faced defeat twice, first in 2009 and then in 2014.

K.V. Singh Deo, a former Kshatriya royal and Parvati Parida, an OBC, have been named as deputy chief ministers.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held on June 12, and will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers and several chief ministers from the BJP-ruled states.

The polls result marked an end to twenty-four years long rule of Naveen Patnaik in the state. Patnaik, however, won his seat from Hinjli by a thin margin of 4,636 votes. 

Voting for assembly seats was held in four phases starting from May 13. Out of total of 147 seats, 28 constituencies went to polls in the first phase on May 13. 35 constituencies went to polls on May 20.

Rest two phases went to polls on May 25 (42 constituencies) and June 1 (42 constituencies).

Lok Sabha elections for 21 seats were also held simultaneously in Odisha with BJP sweeping the state by winning 20 out of total 21 seats. The Congress won the remaining seat.
