Tensions flared at the Makar Dwar entrance of the Parliament complex on Thursday (December 19) as opposition MPs and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) lawmakers confronted each other, exchanging allegations of manhandling.
The BJP accused the Congress of insulting B.R. Ambedkar, while Congress members protested against Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on Ambedkar made earlier in the Rajya Sabha.
Amid the chaos, BJP MPs chanted slogans such as “The country won’t tolerate Ambedkar’s insult,” while Congress legislators accused BJP members of obstructing Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi from entering Parliament, reported The Indian Express.
Lok Sabha proceedings, which resumed briefly at 2 p.m., were adjourned for the day by Krishna Prasad Tenneti due to the unrest and disorder in the House.
The Congress alleged that BJP MPs blocked Gandhi’s entry and displayed unruly behaviour.
Congress leaders announced plans to lodge a formal complaint with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Rahul Gandhi, addressing reporters, claimed that BJP MPs tried to push and threaten him at the Parliament’s entrance.
“At the entrance of Parliament, I was trying to enter when BJP MPs tried to stop me, pushed me, and threatened me,” Gandhi was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, BJP members countered with claims that Gandhi injured two of their MPs, Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, during the altercation.
Sarangi, who was hospitalized following the incident, alleged that Gandhi pushed another MP, causing him to fall. Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Pralhad Joshi visited the injured MPs at RML Hospital to check on their well-being.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the BJP's actions, alleging that its MPs used force against opposition members and claimed that he was pushed by BJP legislators, resulting in a knee injury.
“When I reached Makar Dwar along with the INDIA parties MPs, I was physically pushed by BJP MPs. Thereafter, I lost my balance and was forced to sit down on the ground in front of Makar Dwar. This inflicted an injury on my knees which have already undergone surgery,” the newspaper quoted Kharge as saying.
The incident marks a new low in the escalating tensions between the ruling BJP and opposition parties, with both sides trading accusations over the confrontation.
