Sources within the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)-led NDA government have expressed strong confidence that the 'one nation, one election' initiative will be implemented during the current term as they believe that the move will garner bipartisan support, news agency PTI reported.
As the NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks 100 days in its third term, PTI sources indicate that the unity within the ruling coalition will persist throughout its tenure.
"Definitely, it will be implemented in this tenure itself. It will be a reality," PTI quoted one source, speaking on condition of anonymity.
During his Independence Day speech last month, Prime Minister Modi strongly advocated for 'one nation, one election,' arguing that frequent elections were impeding national progress.
"The nation has to come forward for 'one nation, one election’,” Modi declared from the Red Fort.
He also urged political parties to ensure that national resources benefit the common man and emphasized, "We have to come forward to realise the dream of 'one nation, one election'."
'One nation, one election' is also a key promise in the BJP’s manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections.
In March, a high-level panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind recommended that simultaneous elections be conducted for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as an initial step, followed by coordinated local body elections within 100 days.
Additionally, the Law Commission is expected to propose holding simultaneous elections for all three levels of government—Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies such as municipalities and panchayats—beginning in 2029. The Commission may also suggest provisions for a unity government in cases of a hung parliament or a no-confidence motion.
The Kovind panel did not specify a timeline for implementing simultaneous elections but proposed the formation of an 'Implementation Group' to oversee the execution of its recommendations. The panel has suggested 18 constitutional amendments, most of which would not require ratification by state assemblies, although certain bills would need parliamentary approval.
