The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (March 3) released its list of candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, naming its national president Nitin Nabin as one of the nominees from Bihar.
Alongside Nabin, the party has fielded eight other candidates from Bihar, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Odisha and West Bengal. The party, however, is yet to announce its nominees from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh for the March 16 polls.
Nabin, 45, who assumed charge as the BJP’s national president on January 20, is a four-time member of the Bihar legislative assembly. Considered a political dynast, he is the youngest person to hold the post and was elected unopposed.
Five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar are set to be contested. In addition to Nabin, the BJP has named Bihar BJP general secretary Shivesh Kumar as its second candidate from the state. With the BJP-Janata Dal (United) alliance holding a comfortable majority in the Bihar assembly after its victory in the state elections last November, the combine is widely expected to secure four of the five seats. It remains uncertain whether the BJP, which has the largest number of MLAs in the assembly, will field a candidate for the fifth seat.
From West Bengal, the BJP has nominated former state president Rahul Sinha. Five seats from the state are going to the polls. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) had earlier announced four candidates, including senior advocate Maneka Guruswamy, minister Babul Supriyo, former Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar and actor Koel Mallick.
In Assam, the BJP has opted to elevate state leaders to the Upper House, nominating minister Jogen Mohan from the Himanta Biswa Sarma government and MLA Terash Gowalla, while dropping sitting MPs Rameshwar Teli and Bhubaneswar Kalita.
In Odisha, the party has fielded its state unit president Manmohan Samal. The nomination comes after the BJP formed its first government in the state in 2024. The party has also chosen sitting MP Sujeet Kumar, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) but resigned and joined the BJP in September 2024.
In Haryana, former Lok Sabha MP Sanjay Bhatia has been nominated, while in Chhattisgarh, state unit vice president Laxmi Verma has been fielded.
With nominations announced across several key states, the BJP has set the stage for the March 16 Rajya Sabha polls, while suspense continues over its remaining candidates in other states yet to be declared.
