The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday (January 19)announced the election of five-term Bihar MLA Nitin Nabin, 45, as its new national president, following the completion of a day-long nomination process at the party headquarters in New Delhi. Nabin was the sole contender for the post.
The formal declaration was made by Rajya Sabha member K. Laxman, who served as the Returning Officer for the organisational election. He said that 37 sets of nomination papers had been submitted in support of Nitin Nabin and were found to be valid after scrutiny.
“Now, after a period of withdrawal, in my capacity of National Returning Officer, Sanghathan Parv, Bharatiya Janata Party, I hereby announce that only one name, that of Shri Nitin Nabin, has been proposed for the post of National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party,” Laxman said in a statement.
The process to elect the BJP’s national president was initiated after 30 of the party’s 36 State units completed the election of their respective presidents.
Reportedly around 50% of State units were required to conclude the national president’s poll, the number of completed State elections ensured a sufficiently large electoral college.
Nitin Nabin had earlier been named national working president of the BJP on December 14, following an 18-month-long process of consultations. That appointment was widely seen within the party as a signal of the leadership’s choice for the top organisational post.
The schedule for the formal election was notified on January 16, with nominations invited between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday (January 19, 2026). A total of 37 nomination papers were filed, including those bearing the signatures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Ministers J.P. Nadda, Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah.
Several State units also submitted nominations in his favour, with Chief Ministers including Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh, Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh, Bhupendra Patel of Gujarat and Pramod Sawant of Goa backing his candidature.
According to the statement issued by Laxman, all nominations were found to be in order during scrutiny, and with Nitin Nabin being the only candidate, he was declared elected. He is scheduled to formally assume charge on Tuesday (January 20, 2026).
One of the youngest BJP presidents to date, Nitin Nabin is expected to play a key role in shaping the party’s leadership transition in the coming years.
He hails from a political family in Bihar, with his father, Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, having served as a multi-term BJP MLA. Nitin Nabin entered active politics in 2006, when he was fielded in a bypoll following his father’s death while he was close to completing his engineering degree at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra.
Since then, he has remained undefeated as an MLA, first representing the Patna West constituency and later the Bankipur seat after delimitation.
He has also held ministerial responsibilities in the Bihar government, serving as Roads Minister between August 2021 and 2022, and later handling portfolios including Urban Development, Housing, and Law and Justice from 2024 to 2025.
Within the party organisation, he rose through the ranks of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha at both the State and national levels.
He has also been in charge of organisational responsibilities in States such as Chhattisgarh and Sikkim, with BJP leaders crediting his role in strengthening campaign strategy and internal cohesion, particularly in Chhattisgarh, where the party returned to power in 2023.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to be present when Nitin Nabin formally takes over on Tuesday (January 19, 2026), and that a meeting of the BJP National Council is likely to be convened soon to ratify his election.
