A police security gunner provided to Mahant Raju Das, the head priest of Ayodhya’s Hanuman Garhi temple, was withdrawn after a heated argument took place between the priest and District Magistrate (DM) Nitish Kumar on Friday (June 21) night.
The heated argument took place during a review meet over Bharatiya Janta Party’s (BJP) electoral defect in the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency, under which Ayodhya falls. The meet was attended by Uttar Pradesh ministers Surya Pratap Shahi and Jaiveer Singh.
On Saturday, while recounting what transpired during the meeting, Mahant Das said that he told the people at the meeting that only blaming the party members for BJP candidate and two-time MP, Lallu Singh’s defeat is not right, and that the administration should be held equally responsible, The Indian Express reported.
During the meeting, Das questioned the district administration’s action for sending notices to people, and directing them to vacate their properties for redevelopment works, just before the elections. According to Das, this created anger against the party.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Mahant Das said, “It was around 11 pm Friday when I had an argument with the DM who, along with the SSP, left the meeting immediately. I stepped out after two minutes, only to find that the police gunner for my security was no longer there. I was told that he had been called back immediately.”
He further added that that he will not write to any senior authority in this regard. He also alleged that saints were being ‘humiliated’ in the 'government of saints', referring to the state chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who is also the chief priest of the Gorakhnath Math.
"Santo ki sarkar me santo ka apmaan ho raha hai (sants are being humiliated in the government of sants),” he said.
The District Magistrate, however, stated that the administration was contemplating to withdraw all police gunners provided to Raju Das for some time now.
DM Kumar said, “A process was already underway for the withdrawal of his three police gunners ever since we learnt that three criminal cases were lodged against Raju Das in 2013, 2017 and 2023. Two gunners had been withdrawn and the third has been withdrawn now,” quoted The Indian Express.
