In a gesture highlighting political civility beyond party lines, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday (April 28) visited BJP MLA Anupama Jaiswal at Medanta Hospital in Lucknow, where she is undergoing treatment after suffering burn injuries during a protest in Bahraich.
The BJP legislator was injured while burning effigies of Mr. Yadav and other Opposition leaders amid demonstrations linked to the Constitutional amendment bill brought by the BJP government.
During his visit, Yadav emphasised the need for harmony in public life and appealed for a more humane political culture.
Sharing a photograph from the hospital visit on social media platform X, he wrote, “We don’t want a fire to ignite within society. We want a spark of harmony in society. Our healthy tradition of positive politics has taught us this. That’s why we visited BJP MLA Ms. Anupama Jaiswal and wished her a speedy recovery. Politics has its place, and the importance of human relationships has its place. Let there be harmony, let there be harmony.”
The Samajwadi Party described the visit as a reflection of socialist values and an effort to reduce growing political hostility.
Party spokesperson Sunil Singh Yadav ‘Sajan’ told The Hindu, “At a time when those who propagate hate are trying to take centre stage in political and social discourse, this kind of gesture by our leader, Akhilesh Ji, will blur the fault lines. In political and social life, we need a healing touch rather than hate. Akhilesh Ji set a benchmark in the public discourse.”
Jaiswal, who represents Bahraich in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, sustained injuries during protests targeting Opposition leaders opposing the proposed constitutional amendment. The incident triggered discussions over the nature of political demonstrations and the need for restraint in public expressions of dissent.
Reiterating the party’s position, SP spokesperson Nasser Salim said, “The Samajwadi Party believes that democratic disagreement must never come at the cost of human dignity or personal safety. The unfortunate incident in Bahraich, in which BJP MLA Smt. Anupama Jaiswal, who sustained burn injuries during a protest, is a reminder that expressions of political Opposition should always remain peaceful and safe,”
“The Samajwadi Party has consistently upheld the principle that compassion and empathy must prevail over acrimony. As Akhilesh Yadav himself has stated publicly, politics has its own space, but human relationships and social harmony are equally important. This moment should serve as an opportunity for all of us to reaffirm a shared commitment to restraint, responsibility, and harmony in public life. We sincerely wish Smt. Anupama Jaiswal has a speedy and complete recovery,” said Salim.
The episode has drawn attention to calls for respectful political engagement, with leaders across parties increasingly urging that democratic rivalry should not overshadow basic human concern and mutual respect.
