In a significant political development ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have officially announced their reunion under the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The announcement was made jointly by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami at a press conference in Chennai on Friday (April 11).
The renewed alliance marks a dramatic reversal in relations between the two parties, which had parted ways in September 2023 following a bitter fallout. At the time, the AIADMK had accused the BJP’s then-state president K. Annamalai of making disparaging remarks about AIADMK stalwarts, including former Chief Ministers J. Jayalalithaa and C.N. Annadurai.
Speaking at the press conference, Amit Shah confirmed that the two parties would contest the 2026 assembly elections together, with Palaniswami leading the alliance.
Shah also criticized the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, accusing it of deflecting public attention from issues such as corruption, law and order breakdown, and crimes against Dalits and women, by raking up debates over Sanatan Dharma, the NEET exam, the three-language policy, and delimitation.
“The BJP-AIADMK alliance will be permanent. There will be no hurdles in this partnership moving forward,” Shah declared.
Later that evening, Palaniswami hosted Shah for dinner at his residence.
In a post on social media platform X, Palaniswami said, “This alliance stands united in its unwavering commitment to liberate Tamil Nadu from the regressive evil governance of the DMK, rectify the historic missteps that have hindered the state’s progress, and lay the foundation for a new era of inclusive growth, development, and opportunity.”
“I am deeply grateful to the Hon’ble Union Home Minister Thiru. Amit Shah Avl for honouring the dinner hosted at my residence with his presence. Together, we move forward with a shared vision and steadfast resolve to build a brighter, stronger, and more dynamic TamilNadu,” he added.
The renewed alliance comes amid internal changes within the Tamil Nadu BJP. Tirunelveli MLA Nainar Nagendran is set to replace Annamalai as the party's state president, in a move widely seen as an effort to recalibrate the party’s caste representation strategy.
While both Annamalai and Palaniswami belong to the Gounder community, Nagendran hails from the Thevar community—a key demographic in southern Tamil Nadu.
The DMK, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, slammed the alliance, calling it the “biggest betrayal” of the people of Tamil Nadu.
The party is expected to sharpen its attack on the AIADMK over its renewed ties with the BJP, which remains a polarizing force in the state’s Dravidian political landscape.
With the 2026 elections a year away, the BJP-AIADMK alliance is now expected to craft a joint campaign strategy to challenge the DMK’s dominance in Tamil Nadu.
