Former Education Minister of West Bengal, Partha Chatterjee, the prime accused in the cash-for-job scam in the education department, was admitted to the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) at SSKM Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, on Thursday night following a deterioration in his health.

Hospital authorities revealed that Chatterjee was moved from the emergency observation ward to the cardiology department's ICCU due to worsening cardiac complications.

A specialized medical team has been formed to monitor his condition and determine the next course of treatment.

Chatterjee, who has been in judicial custody for nearly three years, was transferred to the hospital from the Presidency Correctional Home on Monday after experiencing breathing difficulties.

Doctors have since reported further health concerns, including lung and kidney issues, as well as fluctuating levels of sodium, potassium, and creatinine, which have compounded his condition.

Upon admission, Chatterjee was administered a nebulizer and subjected to several medical tests. His health complications have raised concerns, given his history of ailments.

The alleged teacher recruitment scam in the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) and Primary Education Board occurred during Chatterjee’s tenure as Education Minister from 2014 to 2021.

He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in July 2022 on charges of irregularities in the recruitment process.

While several others implicated in the scam have secured bail, Chatterjee has remained in custody.

However, on December 13, 2024, the Supreme Court granted him conditional bail, set to take effect on February 1, 2025, provided he furnishes bail bonds to the satisfaction of the trial court.
