The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has resulted in the removal of nearly one-fifth of names from the previous voters' list in Arunachal Pradesh and over 12% in Chandigarh, according to draft electoral rolls released on Tuesday (July 21).
In Arunachal Pradesh, the draft rolls contain 1.69 lakh fewer names than the 8.87 lakh electors registered before the revision, translating into a deletion rate of around 19%. Officials said a large number of the excluded voters had permanently shifted from their registered addresses, while others could not be traced. Some names were also removed following the deaths of registered electors.
Chandigarh recorded a lower but significant deletion rate of 12.81%. Of the 5,16,427 electors listed before the revision exercise, 66,147 names were not included in the draft rolls. The data showed that 8.47% of the deleted names belonged to voters who had permanently relocated, while 2.43% were classified as absent voters.
Another 0.68% of the excluded entries were those of deceased voters, while 0.50% were identified as duplicate entries. The remaining 0.72% were placed under a miscellaneous or unaccounted-for category.
The Election Commission has allowed voters whose names have been left out of the draft rolls to submit claims and objections by August 20. Those seeking restoration of their names can also use the same process within the prescribed period.
Residents who are eligible to vote and have turned 18, or will attain the age of 18, on or before July 1, 2026, can apply for inclusion in the electoral rolls through Form-6.
For existing voters seeking corrections to their electoral details, a change of address or a replacement of their elector photo identity card (EPIC), the EC has prescribed Form-8. Applications can be submitted online through the ECINET mobile application or portal, or offline with the help of the concerned booth level officers (BLOs).
The publication of the draft rolls marks another stage in the SIR process, with the claims and objections window now providing voters an opportunity to verify their status and seek corrections or inclusion before the final electoral rolls are prepared.
