Two pilots of the Indian Air Force (IAF) were killed after a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed during a training sortie in Karbi Anglong district of Assam on Thursday (March 5) evening.
The aircraft had taken off from the Jorhat Air Force Station earlier in the evening before losing contact with ground control.
The pilots who lost their lives were Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar. The IAF later confirmed that both officers sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
According to officials, the aircraft went down in a hilly and forested area of Karbi Anglong, roughly 60 kilometres from Jorhat.
Images purportedly showing the crash site, located in a remote hill area near the Nilip block of the district, also surfaced on social media, though authorities have not yet verified their authenticity. Investigations into the cause of the crash are expected to follow.
In a post on X, the IAF said both the officers sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
“The IAF acknowledges the loss of Sqn Ldr Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar, who sustained fatal injuries in the Su-30 crash. All personnel of the IAF express sincere condolences and stand firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief,” the IAF said.
Earlier, the IAF mentioned in a post on X that search and rescue mission was initiated after the Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft lost touch with the ground staff. It took off from the Jorhat airbase on Thursday evening and was last in contact at 7.42 pm.
“An IAF Su-30 MKI is reported overdue. The aircraft had taken off from Jorhat, Assam and was last in contact at 7.42 pm. Further details are being ascertained. Search and Rescue mission has been initiated,” said IAF.
