A convoy of Manipur Police came under attack late Wednesday night in Chandel district, where officials said a mob targeted the vehicles at Longja village.
The incident, which occurred on October 1, left several police vehicles damaged, including one belonging to the additional superintendent of Chandel district, according to reports from the news agency PTI.
“Kuki women stood before the convoy and prevented the vehicles from advancing,” officials said, adding that several Kuki organisations have accused the police of being biased towards the Meitei community.
According to the Nagaland Post, the police team had gone to Longja village to carry out a search operation after receiving inputs about the movement of illegal drugs and weapons.
However, with the personnel outnumbered, central security forces, including Assam Rifles units from nearby posts, were rushed in to ensure the safety of the police officers.
Meanwhile, the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) accused the Chandel police of raiding the house of one of its officers during the incident. In a statement, the group said the raid targeting its officers and cadres, who are signatories to the tripartite suspension of operation (SoO) agreement, amounted to a violation of SoO ground rules.
The violence comes against the backdrop of continuing ethnic unrest in Manipur, where at least 260 people have been killed and thousands displaced since clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023.
