The West Bengal-Jharkhand border was reopened after a 24-hour closure, allowing traffic to resume. Sources from the West Burdwan district administration reported that cargo vehicle movement began again around 7:15 PM on Friday, September 20.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had blamed the flood situation in South Bengal on the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), criticizing both the Jharkhand government and the Centre for what she described as "man-made" floods. In response to the flood crisis, she announced that the Jharkhand border would be closed for the next 72 hours, during her visit to flood-affected areas in Panskura.

In accordance with her directives, five border points along the Asansol-Jharkhand border were sealed at 6 PM on Thursday. Police blocked access at various check posts, including the Kalyaneshwari-Duburdihi check post connecting Dhanbad and Asansol, the Chirkunda-Barakar check post on the Barakar River, Runakura Ghat on Nala-Barabani in Jharkhand, the Jamtara-Rupnarayanpur check post, and the Naka checkpost on Kalyaneshwari Road near Maithon Dam.

Consequently, many goods vehicles were either blocked or diverted, resulting in significant congestion at the border starting Thursday evening. Trucks carrying apples from Shimla, pears from Punjab, and packed food for army camps from Delhi found themselves stranded at the National Highway No. 19 in Duburdihi check post.

By Friday morning, hundreds of goods trucks lined up over a 15 km stretch heading towards Jharkhand, creating severe traffic jams that also affected small vehicles and ambulances. Administrative officers and police from districts bordering Jharkhand met at Duburdihi on Thursday night with West Bengal Police, requesting permission for the trucks to proceed, but their appeals were denied.

As frustration mounted among drivers due to the lengthy delays, protests began. On Friday afternoon, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Ajay Kumar Poddar from Kulti joined the demonstration. During an attempt to drive a truck through, clashes erupted with police. A significant police presence was deployed at the checkpoint to manage and bring the situation under control.

By Friday afternoon, DC (Traffic) PVG Satish and other senior police officials arrived at the scene. Traffic control over goods vehicles was lifted at 7:15 PM, with police announcing that cargo vehicles would be released following the necessary instructions.
