A significant political transition unfolded in Bihar on Wednesday as senior BJP leader Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as Chief Minister, marking the party’s first leadership of the State government after decades of coalition dominance.

The new administration took shape with two Deputy Chief Ministers from the Janata Dal (United) — Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Choudhary — signalling a continued alliance arrangement between the BJP and JD(U).

The swearing-in ceremony held at Bihar Lok Bhavan was relatively subdued despite its political significance. Samrat Choudhary replaced the State’s longest-serving Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, who has now moved to the Rajya Sabha. The development is being viewed as a generational shift in Bihar politics, with the BJP securing the chief minister’s post decades after the Bharatiya Jan Sangh’s presence in the State government in 1962.

Top national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, were absent from the ceremony. However, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, former party president JP Nadda and national general secretary BL Santhosh attended the event.

Several NDA allies were present, including Chirag Paswan of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Upendra Kushwaha and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) patron Jitan Ram Manjhi. Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav did not attend the ceremony.
Representing the Tarapur Assembly constituency in Munger, Samrat Choudhary became Bihar’s 24th Chief Minister and only the second leader from the OBC Kushwaha community to hold the post after the brief tenure of Satish Prasad Singh in 1968.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X: “Many congratulations and best wishes to Samrat Choudhary on becoming Chief Minister of Bihar. His energy, dedication to public service and grassroots experience are going to be very helpful. I have full faith that Bihar will scale new heights of all-round success.”

Responding, CM Samrat Choudhary wrote: “Under your illustrious leadership, we will work with complete dedication to realise the goal of a developed Bihar, driven by inclusive growth, good governance and public welfare.”

Former CM Nitish Kumar wrote: “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Samrat Choudhary on taking oath as the new Chief Minister of Bihar today. I am confident that under your leadership, Bihar will develop even more rapidly and join the ranks of the country’s most developed states.”
