The Osmanabad railway station in central Maharashtra has been officially renamed as Dharashiv, marking the latest step in a broader renaming effort by the state government, the Press Trust of India reported.

The Central Railway confirmed the change on Friday (May 30), noting that the station's new code will be DRSV, replacing the earlier code UMD.

The renaming follows the Maharashtra government's earlier decision to change the name of Osmanabad city and district — locally pronounced as Usmanabad — to Dharashiv. The railway station's renaming proposal had been pending with the Indian Railways and has now received final approval.

According to a statement from Central Railway, the Indian Railways Conference Association has sanctioned the new name and station code.

"The new station name and code have been approved by the Indian Railways Conference Association," the release stated.

To implement the change, the Mumbai Passenger Reservation System (PRS) will be temporarily suspended from 11:45 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on June 1, 2025.

Usmanabad was named after a 20th-century ruler of the princely state of Hyderabad.

The new name, Dharashiv, is derived from the ancient Dharashiv caves — a significant 8th-century rock-cut complex located in the region — reflecting the area’s historical and cultural heritage.
