Mumbai witnessed high drama on Sunday (March 24) night as Shiv Sena workers stormed and vandalised a hotel in Khar, where stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra had recorded a show that included a satirical jibe at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The incident followed the viral circulation of a clip from Kamra’s performance, which enraged Shinde’s supporters.

The ransacking took place at The Unicontinental Mumbai after the video surfaced on social media.

In the clip, Kamra performed a parody song, set to the tune of Dil To Pagal Hai, referencing Shinde’s 2022 defection from the undivided Shiv Sena. His use of the term “gaddar” (traitor) sparked sharp reactions from Shiv Sena leaders, who accused him of running a "paid campaign" to malign Shinde’s image.

Party workers not only vandalised the venue but also lodged a police complaint against Kamra, while groups of Sena supporters gathered outside police stations demanding legal action.

Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske issued a warning, saying Kamra had "stepped on the tail of a snake" and would face "dire consequences."

In a video message, Mhaske went further, stating, “You will be forced to flee India.”

Sena MLA Murji Patel vowed to file an FIR, asserting, “We will show Kamra his level.”

Senior leader Sanjay Nirupam also issued a direct threat, saying, “We will thrash Kunal Kamra tomorrow at 11 o’clock.”

Kamra has largely refrained from reacting to the threats. However, in a subtle response, he shared a picture of himself holding a copy of the Indian Constitution, captioning it, “The only way forward.”

Amid the controversy, Aaditya Thackeray of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) condemned the vandalism, calling it an act of insecurity.

The video of Kamra’s act was also shared on X by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, who captioned it “Kunal Ka Kamal.”
