A 20-year-old student from R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was found dead in her room at the staff quarters of Kamarhati ESI Hospital in North 24 Parganas on Thursday night.

This tragic incident comes months after the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at R G Kar Hospital on August 9 last year.

According to police sources, the young woman resided there with her mother, an employee of the hospital, while her father, a bank official, is currently posted in Mumbai, The Indian Express reported.

On the night of the incident, she was alone in the room. When her mother, unable to contact her, entered the house, she discovered her daughter unresponsive.

The student was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation. While no suicide note was found, preliminary reports suggest the student may have been battling depression, raising suspicions of suicide. However, authorities have stated that all possible angles are being examined.

The family did not file any complaint and proceeded with the cremation of the body.
