The Kolkata Police have launched an investigation into allegations by the mother of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-and-murder victim that she was beaten by police during a BJP protest march marking the anniversary of her daughter’s death.

The march, part of the BJP’s “Nabanna Abhijan” programme, was held on Saturday (August 9) in Kolkata.

Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, who had initially dismissed the woman’s claims, said the probe would continue even without a formal complaint from the family.

“She has been injured, and that’s unfortunate. But why it happened and how it happened is being investigated,” Verma told reporters.

“We are investigating from all angles. CCTV footage is being viewed. It is not possible for us to say anything right now without seeing everything.”

The victim’s father has criticised the commissioner’s response, saying, “Whatever happens, the CP just says it is unfortunate and he feels his work is done. If I slap him and then say sorry, will that be okay? Let them examine CCTV footage. Hopefully they will find it.”

Following Saturday’s protest, police filed seven FIRs against BJP leaders and workers, including Kaustab Bagchi, MLAs Ashok Dinda and Agnimitra Pal, on charges of obstructing and threatening police officers on duty. Police said five officers were injured during the clashes.

Bagchi dismissed the FIRs as politically motivated, saying, “No one is bothered about the FIR filed by Kolkata Police. They are servants, they follow what their lady master asks them to do.”
