Two men, including a journalist, were arrested on Tuesday evening for allegedly making offensive comments on social media regarding the Mahakumbh and Hindu deities, police officials told news agency PTI.
The police has claimed that the remarks triggered outrage among sections of the Hindu community, prompting authorities to enhance social media monitoring.
Kamran Alvi, a journalist with over 9,000 followers on Facebook, was arrested for posting a video related to the Mahakumbh that reportedly offended religious sentiments, said SHO Alok Mani Tripathi.
"The accused was promptly arrested, and a case was registered under section 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the BNS Act for insulting religious symbols. He will be presented in the court," PTI quoted Tripathi as saying.
The police are also investigating others who may have circulated the video.
In a separate incident, SHO Amit Pratap Singh reported the arrest of Abhishek Kumar, a resident of Boja village near Jaidpur, for making objectionable social media remarks about Hindu deities and the Mahakumbh. Kumar has been charged, and further investigations are underway.
Earlier in January, a 30-year-old man from Bareilly was apprehended for allegedly posting hateful messages on social media, including threats to disrupt the Mahakumbh, bomb the Ram temple in Ayodhya, and harm Hindu women.
Acting on a tip-off from Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader KK Shankdhar, the police located and arrested the individual within 12 hours. He was charged under sections of the BNS Act for promoting hatred and offending religious sentiments.
While in police custody, the Bareilly man recorded a video apologizing for his actions and vowed not to make such offensive comments again.
The Mahakumbh, held every 12 years, commenced on January 13 in Prayagraj and will continue until February 26. The authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance to ensure the event proceeds peacefully.
