In a bizarre case of geographical confusion, Jharkhand minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader, Sudivya Kumar Sonu has drawn criticism and amusement after he publicly demanded the resignation of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu over a terror attack that occurred in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam.
The minister, who is part of the Congress alliance-led government in Jharkhand, appeared to believe that Pahalgam — a well-known town in Kashmir’s Anantnag district — falls under the jurisdiction of the Himachal Pradesh government.
The remark came during a press interaction in Lohardaga, where Sonu condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists.
While his expression of grief was appropriate, his statement took an unexpected turn when he held CM Sukhu accountable.
“This is an extremely unfortunate incident. Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu must take responsibility and resign. He has failed to protect citizens,” he said.
The video of his comments quickly went viral on social media, prompting widespread ridicule and questions about the minister’s awareness of national geography.
Political observers have noted that this may be the first time a state minister has held a completely unrelated chief minister responsible for an incident in another state — with no clarification or correction following the statement.
The error has sparked a flurry of reactions, with many pointing to the incident as a glaring example of the need for better briefings and fact-checking among public representatives.
