Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Sunday (April 20) accused the Congress of neglecting the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) during its long tenure in power and alleged that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was responsible for halting the caste census in the country.
Yadav’s remarks came in response to Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari’s criticism of the BJP government for allegedly failing to implement the 27% OBC reservation in education and government employment in the state, news agency PTI reported.
Speaking to reporters in Indore, Yadav stated, “Before making false allegations, the state Congress president should look into his affairs and know the past of his party. The caste census in the country was stopped by the first Prime Minister Nehru. The Congress government remained in power for 55 years, but it did nothing for the upliftment of OBCs.”
Highlighting the BJP's record, Yadav — a prominent OBC face in the party — emphasized that the current Prime Minister hails from the OBC community.
“BJP has given four OBC chief ministers to Madhya Pradesh, while Congress has not given a single chief minister from this class to the state,” he added.
The Chief Minister also revived a long-dormant issue — the 1997 death of Congress leader Sarla Mishra — to question Congress’s record on law and order during its previous regimes in the state. His comments came days after a Bhopal district court rejected the police’s closure report in the case and ordered a fresh investigation.
“It is also not hidden from anyone that not only here (Madhya Pradesh), but also in the entire country, Congress people have committed atrocities against women,” Yadav alleged.
Responding to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ongoing visit to the United States, Yadav accused him of tarnishing India’s image abroad. He alleged that Gandhi has a habit to criticize the country during his foreign visits.
“I hope Gandhi will walk the straight path this time (during a foreign tour). I pray to Lord Mahakal to give him wisdom,” the Chief Minister said, reported PTI.
When asked about BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s recent controversial remarks on the judiciary, Yadav declined to comment directly, noting that BJP national president JP Nadda had already clarified the party’s stance.
