Maharashtra's Relief and Rehabilitation Minister, Makarand Jadhav Patil, admitted on Monday (March 10) that reports of eight farmers dying by suicide daily in the state over the past 56 months were "partially true."
During a discussion in the Legislative Council, Jadhav Patil was responding to a question raised by NCP MLC Shivajirao Garje. He acknowledged that farmer suicides were particularly high in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Amravati divisions compared to other regions of the state, news agency PTI reported.
According to official data shared by the minister, in 2024 alone, 952 farmers died by suicide in the Marathwada division, while the Amravati division recorded 1,069 such cases. Other affected regions included Akola (168 suicides), Wardha (112), and Beed (205).
In the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 952 farmer suicides were reported between January and December 2024. Of these, 707 cases were deemed eligible for government assistance, and financial aid was disbursed in 433 cases.
In Beed district, 167 families qualified for relief, with 108 receiving the sanctioned aid. Similarly, in Amravati division, 441 cases were approved, and 332 families received assistance.
Mantha taluka in Jalna district witnessed 13 farmer suicides between April 2023 and September 2024, the minister informed.
Jadhav Patil claimed that the state government remains committed to supporting the families affected by these tragedies and is taking measures to address the crisis.
