The Election Commission of India (ECI) is preparing for another round of door-to-door checks in Delhi after nearly 4.7 million names were excluded from the draft electoral rolls during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Hindustan Times reported.

The fresh verification exercise will be carried out by booth-level officers (BLOs) to examine entries classified as absent, shifted, dead or duplicate (ASDD) in the earlier rounds.

An official told the newspaper on Friday (October 30) that the exercise is intended to establish whether eligible voters have been wrongly excluded before the final electoral roll is published.

Around 14,947 BLOs will be involved in the exercise. Many of them are government school teachers who have been assigned SIR-related responsibilities since June 30. According to the report, the officers will visit only the addresses available in their records and will not attempt to trace voters at other locations.

This will be the third phase of verification in Delhi. More than 6,000 forms were submitted to the ECI following the first re-verification drive, as officials seek to address concerns over the exclusion of eligible voters from the draft list published on August 31.

The ECI has also extended the deadline for filing claims and objections in Delhi from October 31 to November 25. The decision was announced on Thursday (October 29). The process of disposing of claims is expected to continue until December 15, while the final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on December 4.

The report said special camps would be organised at 4,947 polling stations after the Diwali and Chhath festivities. District election officers have also been encouraged to arrange local camps earlier wherever considered necessary.

Although applications for inclusion in the electoral rolls will continue to be accepted throughout the year under the continuous updation process, voters seeking to have their names included in the final roll must submit Form 6 by November 25, the official said.

The additional verification comes amid concerns over the large-scale exclusion of names during the SIR exercise. With the claims and objections deadline now extended, the authorities will have to examine whether those left out of the draft roll include voters who remain eligible to exercise their franchise.
