Satara MP and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Udayanraje Bhosale has called for a special session of Parliament to enact a law against insulting national icons like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Bhosale, a direct descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji, made this demand on Saturday (March 29) after paying tribute at the samadhi of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in Pune district’s Vadu Budruk on the occasion of his 336th death anniversary.

Addressing reporters, Bhosale said the failure to convene a special session for this purpose would indicate that the government is indifferent to the repeated insults directed at the Maratha warriors.

"If they do not want to convene the special session, it would mean that they want, from the bottom of their heart, the insult to be heaped on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. And then people should show them their place," he remarked.

He also criticized the lack of government initiatives in building an international-level memorial for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, despite frequent political rhetoric honoring him.

"Political parties refer to Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj as pillars of strength and great historical figures, yet not a single rupee has been spent on constructing a world-class memorial in their name," he said.

Bhosale further pointed out that no government-approved history of the Maratha rulers has been published, allowing misinformation and distortions to spread through films and other mediums. He suggested that historians should be included in the censor board to ensure historical accuracy in cinematic portrayals.

Emphasizing Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions to Indian governance and social harmony, Bhosale asserted that the Maratha king was a pioneer of secularism.

"Shivaji Maharaj introduced the concept of 'Sarva Dharma Sambhav'—an inclusive philosophy that unites the country and paves the way for India’s progress as a superpower. He brought people of all religions together and laid the foundation of democracy by advocating people's participation in governance," he said.

Bhosale strongly condemned the repeated derogatory remarks made against Shivaji Maharaj and other historical figures, stating that such insults should no longer be tolerated.

"We have laws to protect the reputation of national icons born after Shivaji Maharaj, but despite repeated appeals, no legislation has been introduced to prevent the insults being heaped on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Rajmata Jijau, and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. There is no need for budgetary provisions to enact such a law," he asserted.
