On Monday (January 13), the Madurai police arrested a state functionary of the Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in connection with a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case.
MS Shah, a member of the BJP's economic wing, was booked following a complaint filed by the father of a 15-year-old girl.
The complaint alleged that Shah sent sexually explicit messages to the minor, which the father discovered on her phone. Reports indicate that Shah was acquainted with the girl’s mother, and the father accused him of inappropriate behaviour and sexual assault.
According to the complaint, the father frequently travelled for business, during which time Shah grew close to his wife. Over the past few years, Shah and the mother reportedly took the girl on outings, during which he allegedly sexually assaulted her. He also sent her inappropriate messages and promised gifts such as a bike and a car.
Shah has been charged under the POCSO Act, including Section 11(1) (use of words, showing pornography, and exposing the child’s body), Section 11(4) (sexual assault), and Section 12 (sexual harassment). His phone has been seized, and an investigation is underway.
A police officer quoted by Histustan Times stated, “The father travelled frequently for his business across India and his wife and Shah had befriended each other and in the last couple of years, they took his daughter out with them."
The police officer added, "The father has complained that during these times, the accused has allegedly sexually assaulted his daughter and sent her sexual messages and promised to buy her a bike, a car.”
