Renewing its long-standing demand for transparency on the fate of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) on Friday called on the Union government to formally accept the findings of the Justice Mukherjee Commission and take immediate steps to declassify all remaining files linked to the freedom fighter.

The demand was raised by AIFB General Secretary G. Devarajan while addressing a programme organised by the party to mark Netaji’s birth anniversary as ‘Deshprem Divas’, the party said in a statement, news agency PTI reported.

The commemoration included a large public meeting later in the day at Netaji Subhas Park in Daryaganj, which saw the participation of hundreds of people, including party leaders, social activists, youth and admirers of Netaji.

Speaking at the gathering, Devarajan urged the government to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to declassify pending files related not only to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose but also to the Indian National Army (INA) and the Azad Hind Sarkar, the provisional government established by Bose during his exile. He stressed that bringing the full historical record into the public domain was essential for justice and the nation’s conscience.

He also cautioned the government against any move to bring to India the “so-called mortal remains (ashes) of Netaji, which are reportedly kept at Renkoji Temple in Tokyo, Japan.”

Referring to the findings of the Justice Manoj Kumar Mukherjee Commission of Enquiry, Devarajan said, “The Justice Manoj Kumar Mukherjee Commission of Enquiry, the last enquiry commission constituted by the Government of India, had categorically concluded that no plane crash occurred at Taihoku Airport in Taiwan on 18th August 1945.”

In light of these conclusions, he said, the claim that Netaji’s ashes are preserved at the Renkoji Temple was unfounded. Devarajan asserted that the narrative surrounding the ashes was false, baseless and misleading.

“Any attempt to bring so-called ashes to India would amount to a grave disrespect to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and would deeply hurt the sentiments of millions of Indians who hold Netaji in the highest reverence,” he said.

According to the party, the programme concluded with participants renewing their pledge to uphold the ideals of patriotism, secularism and uncompromising nationalism associated with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The AIFB said it organised a series of events across Delhi to commemorate the “life, ideals, and unmatched contribution of Netaji to India’s freedom struggle.”

Earlier in the day, at Netaji Bhawan, the party’s Delhi headquarters, Devarajan hoisted the party flag and floral tributes were paid to Netaji by garlanding his statue, marking the start of the day-long observances.

The All India Forward Bloc is a left-wing nationalist party founded by Subhas Chandra Bose in 1939 as a faction within the Indian National Congress and was later formalised as an independent political party in 1940.
