In a significant display of solidarity with protesting junior doctors, senior faculty members at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata submitted their resignations on Tuesday (October 8). This comes in the wake of the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor, which has sparked widespread outrage.

Visuals shared on social media captured the moment when 50 senior doctors resigned, while students applauded in support.

The junior doctors have been on a hunger strike since Saturday, demanding justice for their deceased colleague and calling attention to an alleged corruption-threat syndicate. Their protest also advocates for campus democracy and a more patient-friendly environment at the medical facility.

Among their specific demands are the establishment of a centralized referral system for all hospitals and medical colleges in the state, implementation of a bed vacancy monitoring system, and the formation of task forces to ensure essential provisions such as CCTV, on-call rooms, and washrooms at their workplaces.

Additionally, they are seeking increased police protection in hospitals, the recruitment of permanent female police personnel, and the swift filling of vacant positions for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers.

The mass resignations were prompted by the lack of response from authorities to address their concerns and prevent a looming health crisis. Earlier in the day, approximately 15 senior doctors joined their junior counterparts in a symbolic hunger strike to express their solidarity.

The protests coincide with the Durga Puja festivities in Kolkata, which have been overshadowed by this heinous incident. West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, addressing the situation, assured that 90 percent of ongoing projects at medical colleges in the state would be completed by next month.

He has also urged the protesting doctors to return to work, emphasizing the government's commitment to addressing their concerns.

The junior doctors initiated their "cease work" protest following the tragic incident involving their fellow medic, who was found murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 during her duty hours.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is currently investigating the case, has charged Sanjoy Roy, a former contractual staff member with Kolkata Police, with the rape and murder of the trainee doctor. The earlier protests had been suspended after 42 days on September 21, following assurances from the state government to address their demands.
