Fourteen people were killed and sixteen others were injured when a bus carrying 40 passengers from India plunged into a river in Nepal, authorities reported on Friday.
The bus, which had departed from the Indian town of Gorakhpur near the Nepalese border, was en route to Kathmandu from Pokhara when it veered off the highway. The accident occurred on the Prithvi Highway near Aanbu Khaireni, a town about 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of Kathmandu.
After veering off the highway, the bus rolled into the fast-flowing Marsyangdi River and came to a stop on the rocky riverbank. The top of the bus was ripped open due to the impact of the accident.
"The bus bearing number plate UP (Uttar Pradesh) FT 7623 plunged into the river and is lying on the bank of the river," a senior police official told the news agency ANI.
Police and army teams were engaged in rescuing people from the wreckage, climbing down long ladders to reach the river and using ropes to pull out the injured and deceased.
The relief commissioner from Uttar Pradesh, stated that a senior official was being sent to the site to coordinate with Nepalese authorities, reported ANI.
The accident marks the second bus-related incident in that region of Nepal in just over a month. Last month, two buses were swept away by landslides near the location of Friday’s accident.
Of the 65 passengers aboard the two buses, only three survived, and approximately half of the bodies were recovered. The remaining bodies were washed away by the Trishuli River, some traveling as far as 100 kilometres, The Hindu reported.
