At least five people lost their lives and seven others were injured on Monday (June 9) morning when multiple passengers fell off a moving local train near Mumbra railway station in Thane district.
The tragic incident occurred around 9 am and has prompted an official investigation, according to the Central Railway.
The accident took place on a Kasara-bound local train that had departed from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
As the train was passing through the Diva-Mumbra stretch, passengers hanging on to the footboard reportedly collided with individuals clinging to another oncoming train heading towards CSMT, resulting in several people being thrown onto the tracks.
Reports suggest that the collision between passengers of two fast-moving trains traveling in opposite directions led to the accident. An inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances behind the mishap.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed sorrow over the incident, calling it "extremely unfortunate."
In a statement, he said, “The incident in which a total of eight passengers fell from a local train between Diva and Mumbra stations, resulting in some fatalities, is extremely unfortunate. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the deceased.”
“The local administration is coordinating efforts on the ground. I pray to the Almighty for the swift recovery of the injured. The railway department has initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident,” he added.
He also confirmed that the railway department has launched a formal investigation.
Anil Shinde, Senior Police Inspector at Mumbra police station, said they were alerted at around 9.15 am and rushed to the site, where they found at least five people dead and seven others injured.
The victims were immediately taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, while four of the injured reportedly made their way to Jupiter Hospital on their own.
The incident has once again raised concerns about overcrowding and safety on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, often referred to as the city’s lifeline.
