The death toll in the cruise boat accident at Bargi Dam in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district rose to 13 after rescue teams recovered two more bodies on Sunday morning, officials said, news agency PTI reported.

The victims included a five-year-old child and his uncle, whose remains were located after an intensive multi-agency search operation.

The accident occurred on Thursday evening when a nearly two-decade-old boat operated by the State tourism department capsized amid stormy weather conditions. Authorities had launched a large-scale rescue and recovery mission immediately after the incident.

“The bodies of Mayuram (5) and his uncle Kamraj (around 50), an employee of the Ordnance Factory in Khamaria, were found floating and were fished out of the dam,” Bargi Sub Divisional Officer of Police Anjul Ayank Mishra told PTI over the phone.

More than 200 personnel were engaged in the search operation, including teams of Army divers flown in from Agra, along with members of the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force and local divers. Police said rescuers scanned areas 40-50 feet deep across a five-kilometre stretch of the reservoir while looking for the missing victims.

All 13 missing persons identified have now been accounted for, he said, adding the bodies were sent to a government hospital for postmortem.

Officials stated that out of the 41 passengers whose identities have been confirmed, 28 were rescued following the capsize. CCTV footage from the boarding area showed 43 individuals moving towards the vessel, though authorities have so far been able to verify only 41 passengers.

The State Government on Friday (May 1) ordered a probe into the incident and dismissed three crew members. It also banned the operation of similar vessels in the State.
