A day after an avalanche struck a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project in Chamoli district, eight workers remain trapped as rescue efforts continue. Officials confirmed on Saturday that 47 workers have been successfully evacuated in the past 24 hours.
According to the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, the avalanche hit around 7:15 AM on February 28, affecting workers engaged in clearing a road stretch between Mana village and Mana Pass. The labourers were inside bunkers at the time of the incident, said officials.
“We have been able to rescue 47 people and search is underway for the remaining eight workers. We are hopeful they will also be rescued soon,” Vinod Kumar Suman, secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority told The Indian Express.
The Chamoli district administration stated that the trapped workers hail from various states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir.
A list released by the authorities also mentions ten workers whose state affiliations are yet to be confirmed.
The Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), stationed in Mana, are leading the rescue operation, ensuring swift efforts to reach those still trapped.
