Cyclonic Storm Fengal made landfall along the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts past midnight on Saturday, moving west-southwest and gradually weakening into a deep depression, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The storm is being closely monitored using Doppler Weather Radars in Chennai and Karaikal.
While the cyclone caused significant rainfall, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, KKSSR Ramachandran, confirmed there were no reports of major damage.
Tragically, three individuals lost their lives to electrocution in rain-related incidents in Chennai, reported India Today.
However, the storm’s impact was less severe than initially anticipated, with no significant damage reported in Puducherry. The Indian Army rescued over 100 people from a flooded locality in the Union Territory.
Ahead of the cyclone’s landfall, the Puducherry administration sent SMS alerts to 1.2 million residents, urging them to remain vigilant.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin monitored the situation closely. CM Stalin conducted virtual reviews with district collectors and senior officials, and visited a relief camp in Chengelpet district to interact with residents, reported PTI. Eighteen disaster relief teams were deployed in vulnerable areas.
The storm disrupted flight operations at Chennai airport, affecting over 10,000 passengers due to cancellations and diversions. Following consultations with the IMD and airline managers, the Airports Authority of India announced the resumption of services from 1 a.m. on Sunday.
Passengers were advised to contact their respective airlines for updated flight schedules.
