Fresh political controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after a video surfaced online showing a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader allegedly beating a woman with a stick in the Bahri market area of Sidhi district.
The clip, which went viral on social media on Sunday (February 8), has prompted sharp criticism from the Congress, which accused the Mohan Yadav-led BJP government of presiding over a rise in “incidents of assault against women by BJP leaders” in the state.
The incident took place in the Sihawal assembly constituency. BJP leader Santosh Pathak has been accused of assaulting the woman using sticks and fists.
According to a report by The Times of India, the police have registered a case against Pathak on the basis of the woman’s complaint.
The newspaper identified Pathak as a YouTube influencer. As per the complaint, the woman ran a roadside stall, and Pathak had earlier forced her to remove it from the location.
Reacting to the viral video, Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Jitu Patwari launched a scathing attack on the BJP through a post on X.
He wrote, “Pradhanmantri Narendra Modi ne kaha tha Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao, lekin yeh kehna bhool gaye ki BJP netaon se hi betiyon ko bachao. Aaj Sidhi mein ek behen ke saath BJP neta ne laathi se berahmi se maarpeet ki (Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao, but forgot to say that daughters should also be protected from BJP leaders themselves. Today in Sidhi, a woman was brutally beaten with a stick by a BJP leader).”
Patwari further alleged, “Poore pradesh mein BJP netaon dwara behnon ke saath maarpeet ki ghatnayein badh rahi hain. Satta ke ahankaar mein BJP ke gunde ab pradesh ki behnon par atyachar karne par utar aaye hain (The incidents of assault against women by BJP leaders are increasing across the state. Drunk on power, BJP goons have now started targeting the women of the state with acts of violence).”
He added, “Ab yahi behnein in BJP netaon ko satta se bahar kar jawab dengi (Now these very women will respond by kicking these BJP leaders out of power).”
Holding Chief Minister Mohan Yadav accountable, Patwari pointed out that the chief minister also holds the home portfolio and accused him of failing to ensure the safety of women in the state.
The Madhya Pradesh unit of the Congress party also demanded immediate action against the accused.
In a separate post on X, the party called for Santosh Pathak’s arrest, saying, “This is the same BJP that puts on a sham of worshiping girls on stages for votes, while on the ground, it shields those who trample on women. Mohan Ji, will your incompetent home minister still evade responsibility for this incident? If there’s even a shred of ethics left in power, then register a case against Santosh Pathak immediately and have him arrested.”
