An Uttar Pradesh Police constable accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl before allegedly murdering her was attacked by hospital staff during his medical examination at the district hospital in Gorakhpur on Thursday (July 30), amid widespread public outrage over the case.
The accused, identified as Abhishek Yadav, a 2018-batch constable, was brought to the hospital as part of legal formalities after being produced before a court. According to reports, doctors and nurses allegedly assaulted him, expressing anger over allegations that he had “attempted to rape” the child, whose body was later recovered near a river.
According to The Indian Express, police had to deploy additional personnel to complete Yadav's medical examination before taking him back into custody.
Investigators alleged that the girl had been returning home on Wednesday afternoon after visiting a patient, her sister, at a hospital when Yadav abducted her on a motorcycle. CCTV footage reportedly showed a man in police uniform following the child. Investigators later traced the motorcycle to Yadav, who is said to have led police to the location where the girl's body was recovered.
Gorakhpur Senior Superintendent of Police Kaustubh said disciplinary proceedings to dismiss Yadav from the police force had already been initiated.
“He does not deserve to be serving in the police force after being involved in such a grisly act. He is a habitual offender… he was jailed in January last year for allegedly molesting a woman and was suspended. He was released on bail and his suspension was revoked in September. He was on duty in the Dial 112 unit,” the SSP told The Indian Express.
According to media reports, authorities are also preparing to invoke the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA) against Yadav. Reports noted that he had previously been jailed in connection with a molestation case and suspended from service before his suspension was later revoked. The SSP also said investigators reviewed more than 200 CCTV recordings before identifying the alleged accused.
The investigation began after the victim's family lodged a missing person's complaint with the police. The inquiry ultimately led to Yadav's arrest and the recovery of the child's body the following morning.
The case has sparked outrage over the conduct of the accused and renewed questions about disciplinary oversight within the police force, particularly in light of the allegations that he had previously faced criminal charges before being reinstated to active duty.
