Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar’s son, Bandi Bhageerath, appeared before the police in connection with a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case after authorities intensified efforts to secure his presence for investigation.

The development came after police issued a look-out circular to prevent him from leaving the country following allegations made in a complaint by the mother of a 17-year-old girl.

In a statement, Bandi Sanjay Kumar said, "In connection with the allegations made against his son and out of respect for the law, he handed Bhageerath over through advocates for police investigation.”

The Union Minister said that everyone is equal before the law, whether it is his son or an ordinary citizen, and added that everyone must abide by the law. Earlier, the BJP leader from Telangana insisted his family was being targeted and maligned.

Bandi Sanjay Kumar said his son has repeatedly maintained that he committed no wrongdoing. He said they initially intended to hand him over to the police immediately after the complaint was lodged.

However, after consulting lawyers and presenting available evidence before them, the lawyers reportedly said the case would be dismissed and that bail would certainly be granted, which caused the delay.

He further said that even now the lawyers believe bail is likely to be granted. However, he decided not to delay the matter further and personally brought his son and handed him over through lawyers for investigation.

Earlier on Friday, the Telangana High Court had denied interim protection from arrest to Bhageerath.

Contrary to the claim of the minister, Cyberabad police commissioner M. Ramesh Reddy told reporters that Bhageerath was arrested near the State Police Academy at Narsingi. He was shifted to Pet Basheerabad police station en route to the magistrate’s house.

Union minister Kumar’s statement went on to say that he kept his word of treating his son like any other person before law.

“All of us have to abide by law. My son has been repeatedly telling me that he did no wrong. In fact, I wanted to surrender him at the police station as soon as the complaint was received against him. We consulted lawyers and presented all evidence before them. On perusal, they told me that the case will not stand legal scrutiny and that my son will get bail. That is the reason why there was some delay,” said Kumar.

“Even today, the lawyers were telling that he will get bail. But I felt it was not fair to delay investigation further. So, I brought my son and sent him to the police, escorted by lawyers. I have complete faith in law,” he added.

Police officials said further legal procedures would follow as the investigation progresses, while the case continues to draw political attention in Telangana.
