A Paralympic athlete was found dead in Ghaziabad on Saturday (May 30), prompting a police investigation that led to the arrest of another para-athlete allegedly linked to the killing.

Authorities identified the deceased as Chirag Tyagi, whose body was discovered in the Sai Kunj area.

According to police, information about a body lying in the locality was received shortly after 3 pm, following which officers rushed to the scene and initiated legal proceedings.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, City and Trans Hindon, Dhawal Jaiswal, told The Indian Express, “The team immediately reached the spot and sent the body for a post-mortem examination.”

During the course of the investigation, police examined CCTV footage from the area and subsequently arrested fellow Paralympic athlete Yash Khatik in connection with the case.

The deceased was identified as Chirag Tyagi, a Paralympic athlete, DCP Jaiswal said, adding that based on CCTV footage, the accused was arrested.

According to Jaiswal, Yash allegedly told police that he used to practice along with Tyagi earlier and both used to participate in competitions under the blind athletics category.

“The accused told police that Chirag had raised and submitted a complaint regarding Yash’s document verification on the basis of which his qualification got cancelled. This made Yash upset and in order to take revenge he allegedly shot Chirag with a pistol,” the DCP added.

Police said the investigation is continuing and efforts are underway to determine whether any other individuals were involved in the crime. Authorities are examining all available evidence as part of the probe into the athlete’s death.
