The aunt of the minor girl, who was allegedly raped by former block chief Nawab Singh Yadav at a private college in Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested, news agency PTI reported. The main accused, Yadav was arrested on August 12 in connection with the case.

A senior police officer reported that the girl's aunt, who is accused of taking the 15-year-old to the college where Yadav allegedly raped her on the night of August 11-12, was arrested on Tuesday.

The case has ignited a political clash between the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) and the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP has claimed that Yadav, a former block chief, was a close associate of SP leader Dimple Yadav during her tenure as the Lok Sabha MP for Kannauj.

Superintendent of Police, Amit Kumar Anand said, "A Special Operations Group (SOG) of the police has arrested the girl's aunt, who was absconding for seven days, from the Tirwa area of Kannauj," reported PTI

“During interrogation, the girl's aunt claimed that Nawab Singh Yadav's brother lured her with money to retract her statement, skip medical test (of the girl). She also claimed to have been pressured to name other people and say that the incident is a conspiracy in order to influence the course of the investigation," Anand said

According to Anand, the girl's aunt also informed the police that she has known Yadav for five to six years and maintains a close relationship with him.

"Yadav had called the girl to his college on the night of August 11, when he molested and raped her. The victim dialled the emergency number 112 from her aunt's mobile and informed the police, who immediately reached the spot and arrested Yadav, who was later sent to jail," the police officer said.

Anand also added that a case has been filed against the girl's aunt under Section 61/2 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the POCSO Act for allegedly aiding Yadav, the accused in the rape case.

According to earlier statements from the police, Yadav, who manages the private college, had invited the girl and her aunt on the night of August 11 under the pretence of assisting the teenager with a job opportunity.

On the night of August 11-12, Yadav was arrested for attempting to rape the minor at his college. The following day, a medical examination confirmed that the girl had been raped, leading to the charge being added to the FIR, the police informed.
