A controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after the state’s IPS Officers’ Association condemned alleged threats issued by BJP MLA Pritam Lodhi against a police officer investigating a case involving the legislator’s son.

The incident has triggered sharp reactions within administrative circles, raising concerns over intimidation of law enforcement officials and the conduct of public representatives, news agency PTI reported.

The Madhya Pradesh IPS Officers’ Association (MPIOA) lodged strong objections following the circulation of videos in which Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Picchore, Pritam Lodhi, was purportedly seen threatening Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Ayush Jakhar.

The controversy stems from a police investigation into an accident involving Lodhi’s son, who was accused of driving his vehicle into multiple people last week.

According to the PTI report, another video surfaced showing Lodhi allegedly warning that if SDOP Jakhar failed to explain within 15 days under whose directions action was being taken against his son, he would mobilise thousands of supporters to surround the officer’s residence and “fill it with cow dung.”

The report added that the MLA did not respond to phone calls seeking his reaction.

“The comments made by Pichhore MLA Pritam Singh Lodhi are not only inappropriate toward a police officer but also contrary to the dignity of public life,” said the MPIOA in a statement.

The case relates to an incident on April 16 when Lodhi’s son, Dinesh, allegedly rammed his Thar vehicle into five people, including two women walking along the roadside and three labourers travelling on a motorcycle.

A video from the accident site reportedly showed Dinesh arguing with those injured and questioning why they did not move despite his honking.

In an earlier video, Lodhi was heard defending his son and challenging the police officer’s authority.

“I simply cannot stomach what the SDOP of Karera has said. He warned my son not to be seen here again. I want to ask the SDOP, does Karera belong to your father? Normally, I wouldn’t say this, but now I want to make it clear… my son will return to Karera, and he will contest the elections. If your father has the guts, let him try to stop him,” Lodhi was earlier heard saying.

The IPS Officers’ Association stated that the language used against SDOP Jakhar was vulgar, indecent and threatening, and described it as highly condemnable and against democratic norms. The association warned that such behaviour undermines administrative morale and weakens institutional functioning.

“Public representatives are expected to maintain restraint and decorum in their conduct and language. This type of threatening language cannot be tolerated in any democratic system,” said MPIOA president Chanchal Shekhar, reported PTI.

The episode has once again brought attention to the growing tension between elected representatives and law enforcement agencies, with senior officers stressing the need to protect institutional autonomy and uphold democratic accountability.
