Normal life in the Imphal Valley districts of Manipur was disrupted due to an 18-hour bandh called by the militant outfit National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM), officials reported.

Shops, businesses, and banks across the five valley districts remained shut, and public transport stayed off the roads following the bandh, which began at midnight on Saturday, news agency PTI reported.

A few private vehicles were seen operating, and essential services were exempt from the bandh’s restrictions.

However, an official speaking to PTI said that life in the hill districts remained largely unaffected.

The NRFM called for the bandh in protest against the merger agreement signed on this day in 1949 between Manipur’s then ruler, Maharaja Bodhchandra, and the Government of India.

The agreement marked Manipur’s formal integration into the Indian Union on October 15, 1949.
