The Mizo National Front (MNF) has called for the immediate removal of N. Biren Singh from the position of Manipur Chief Minister, citing his failure to address the ongoing ethnic conflict in the state.

Referring to the suffering of the Kuki-Zomi community—whom they describe as "Zofate brethren" due to their shared ethnic ties—the MNF stated that the crisis has reached "intolerable levels," The Indian Express reported.

In a statement released on Thursday, the MNF criticized Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s handling of the crisis. They accused him of inaction and misuse of power, which they claim have exacerbated the situation.

“Chief Minister Biren Singh’s inaction and misuse of power have only worsened the situation, making his continuation in office both untenable and shameful. His leadership has not only failed to resolve the crisis but has also perpetuated the suffering of innocent people. We demand that Chief Minister Biren Singh step down immediately. Furthermore, the Central government must take urgent, decisive action to end this crisis once and for all, ensuring that the people of Manipur reclaim their democratic rights and dignity,” the statement said.

The MNF reaffirmed its support for the current Mizoram government’s efforts to aid the displaced. The party urged the government to remain steadfast in its commitment to the welfare of the Kuki-Zomi people.

"We will wholeheartedly support any initiative by the Mizoram government that prioritises the welfare and well-being of Zofate across the region. Let this commitment serve as a beacon of hope, ensuring that our shared values of unity, compassion, and resilience continue to guide us through these challenging times," the MNF statement read.

They concluded by expressing hope that the shared principles of solidarity and resilience would guide the region through these challenging times.

The conflict in Manipur, which began last year, displaced over 12,000 members of the Kuki-Zomi community, many of whom sought refuge in Mizoram. Zoramthanga, who was Mizoram’s Chief Minister at the time and whose party, the MNF, is still part of the NDA, had expressed strong solidarity with the affected community.

The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), currently in power in Mizoram, has continued to extend support to the displaced, reinforcing the ethnic bond between the Mizos and the Kuki-Zomi.
