Fresh tension has surfaced in Manipur’s hill districts following a deadly confrontation between rival Naga insurgent groups, triggering security concerns and unrest in neighbouring areas, officials said.

Four people who were members of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim Eastern Flank faction were killed in Manipur’s Kamjong district during a gunfight between Naga insurgent groups, reported Hindustan Times.

According to officials, the incident took place on Saturday (March 28) between 8.30 pm and 9.20 pm near Hongbei village under Kasom Khullen block, wherein cadres of the eastern flank faction were allegedly ambushed by suspected members of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim – Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) faction.

During the incident four members of the NSCN eastern flank faction were killed while two of them sustained injuries and escaped from the spot. The insurgent group issued a statement saying that it was “deeply saddened” by the loss of its cadres, who it claimed were “shot on the line of duty.”

The violence soon reverberated beyond Kamjong. On Sunday (March 29), tension gripped parts of Ukhrul, a region dominated by the Tangkhul Naga tribe, where a mob allegedly set an NSCN office in Ukhrul town on fire, reported Deccan Herald.

Security forces were subsequently deployed to prevent further escalation and maintain calm in sensitive areas.

Responding to the developments, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh appealed to community leaders to exercise restraint and cooperate with authorities in restoring peace.

“The violence cannot bring any solution, and I appeal to all to shun any forms of violence. The government has taken the development seriously, and the law should take its own course,” said the CM said in a statement on Sunday evening, reported Deccan Herald.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts are underway to prevent retaliatory incidents and stabilise law and order in the hill districts.
