In solidarity with the protests against the alleged rape and murder of a young doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Government College and Hospital, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared a 24-hour nationwide cessation of non-emergency services. The withdrawal will begin at 6 am on Saturday (August 17).

In response to the vandalism at the hospital during the midnight protests for justice for the 31-year-old woman, the Kolkata Police have arrested 19 individuals and detained three others.

Unidentified miscreants forcibly entered the hospital premises shortly after midnight on Thursday and vandalized parts of the facility where a trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered the previous week.

According to the police, a group of at least 40 individuals, who were posing as protesters, breached the hospital grounds, threw stones at officers, and damaged property.

They specifically targeted the emergency department, nursing station, and medicine store, also destroying CCTV cameras and ransacking a stage where junior doctors have been protesting since August 9.

Meanwhile , a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team began their investigation on Wednesday by visiting the hospital. It has come to light that Sanjay Roy, the man accused of raping and murdering the doctor, had previously assaulted his wife. Roy's wife had lodged a complaint at Khalighat police station alleging assault by her husband.

During their investigation, CBI officials interviewed the victim’s parents, questioned hospital staff, and reviewed call records from a suspect already in custody.

Additionally, the CBI has summoned eight doctors, along with other medical personnel and three trainee doctors from the hospital, for questioning.
