Dharmendra, one of Indian cinema’s most beloved and enduring stars, passed away at his Mumbai residence on Monday (November 24) at the age of 89. His final rites were conducted at the Pawan Hans crematorium in the presence of family members and eminent personalities from the film fraternity.
The actor had been undergoing treatment and had made multiple visits to Breach Candy Hospital in recent weeks before being moved home on November 12. His 90th birthday was only weeks away on December 8.
He leaves behind his wives Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini; sons Sunny and Bobby Deol; and daughters Vijeta, Ajeeta, Esha and Ahana.
Among those who gathered to bid farewell were Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Salim Khan, Salman Khan and Abhishek Bachchan.
Often hailed as the "He-Man" of Hindi cinema, Dharmendra enjoyed a prolific career spanning more than six decades, delivering iconic roles in films such as Chupke Chupke, Phool Aur Patthar, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Seeta Aur Geeta, Jugnu, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Sholay, Dharam Veer and many others. His most recent performances came in 2023 in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya by Maddock Films in 2024. His final screen appearance will be in Sriram Raghavan’s war drama Ikkis, featuring Jaideep Ahlawat and Agastya Nanda, scheduled to release on December 25.
Beyond cinema, Dharmendra also ventured briefly into politics. In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he contested on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket from Rajasthan’s Bikaner constituency and won by defeating Congress leader Rameshwar Lal Dudi with a margin of nearly 60,000 votes.
