Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest government honour for contributions to Indian cinema.

A three-time National Award winner, Chakraborty is one of the few actors to have won a Best Actor award for his debut performance. With a career spanning over 200 films across Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Odia, Telugu, and Tamil cinema, he is celebrated for his dynamic acting and dance skills.

Mithun Chakraborty rose to stardom in the 1980s and 90s, becoming a superstar of his era. In recent years, he has smoothly transitioned into impactful supporting roles. Some of his most memorable films include Disco Dancer, Mrigayaa, Gudia, Guru, and Oh My God.

Chakraborty is also a prominent member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He joined the party ahead of the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, after parting ways with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). His entry into the BJP was seen as a significant move, given his popularity and influence in West Bengal, where he had previously aligned with the TMC.

The announcement was made by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X, where he wrote, “Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.”

The award will be presented during the 70th National Awards ceremony on October 8, where Chakraborty will be honoured alongside other winners.
