Eminent Bengali singer Pratul Mukherjee, best known for his timeless song Ami Banglay Gaan Gai, passed away at the age of 83 at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday (February 15).

Mukherjee, who had once backed Mamata Banerjee during the rise of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, had been battling multiple age-related ailments.

Following the news, state ministers Aroop Biswas and Indranil Sen rushed to SSKM Hospital. Biswas noted that the Chief Minister had been closely monitoring Mukherjee’s health condition.

As a tribute, his mortal remains have been placed at Rabindra Sadan, allowing the public to pay their respects. A ceremonial gun salute will be given before his body is donated to SSKM Hospital, as per his final wish.

Born in 1942 in Barishal, now in Bangladesh, Pratul Mukherjee came from a humble background—his father was a schoolteacher. After the Partition in 1947, his family relocated to Chinsura, West Bengal.

Mukherjee's artistic journey began in 1952 when he took the stage in a school play as an actor and singer. He wrote his first song in 1962, having previously composed music for various poems. His powerful, socially conscious lyrics resonated deeply with the masses, earning him recognition among the Naxalites as "Sejda Comrade."

Despite starting his professional career as a banker, Mukherjee remained dedicated to music. His first solo album, Jete Hobe, was released in 1994. Over the years, he became widely known for songs like Charlie Chaplin and Dinga Bhasao Alu Becho.

His discography includes albums such as Pathore Pathore Nache Agun, Otho Hey, Kuttus Kattus, Swapner Feriwala, Tomake Dekechilam, Swaponpure, Onek Notun Bandhu Hok, Hajabarala, Dui Kanur Upakhyan, and Andhar Name.

He also contributed as a playback singer for the film Gonsaibaganer Bhoot.
